Acerca de esta escucha
Discover the key architectural concepts behind the world's most incredible buildings and structures.
The Architecture Book goes beyond other architecture books to analyze not just buildings themselves, but the ideas and principles that make each of the featured structures key to the history and evolution of our built environment.
From ancient and classical architecture through Medieval, Gothic, and Renaissance buildings, the explosion of Baroque and Rococo, and the 19th-century "battle of the styles", to the emergence of modernism, postmodernism, and the glittering skyscrapers of the 20th and 21st centuries, the book traces the evolution of construction. This book explains how architects throughout history have pushed boundaries and created innovative buildings. Examples of architectural movements and styles are drawn from all over the world and celebrated buildings from Europe and North and South America feature alongside key examples from China, Japan, and India, and stunning religious structures from mosques to churches, and from stupas to pagodas and temples.
Offering a fresh perspective on our man-made environment, The Architecture Book is the essential guide for everyone who is passionate about buildings and the ideas behind them.

Historia
Although small enough to be an island, Sicily is also large enough to be a continent and has at least two souls: a Western and an Eastern one. These two souls of Sicily are ancient, when the island was inhabited by the Elymians and the Sikani. This ancient "rivalry" continued with Phoenicians and Greeks, Romans and Carthaginians. A trip to Sicily, therefore, is not only a journey through the history, culture, gastronomy, and flavors of a rich and generous land, but it is also a profound journey into the human soul and into the history!

Historia
Civilization was born 8,000 years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place. In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period.

Historia
In elegant and often hilarious prose, Kunstler depicts our nation's evolution from the Pilgrim settlements to the modern auto suburb in all its ghastliness. The Geography of Nowhere tallies up the huge economic, social, and spiritual costs that America is paying for its car-crazed lifestyle. It is also a wake-up call for citizens to reinvent the places where we live and work, to build communities that are once again worthy of our affection. Kunstler proposes that by reviving civic art and civic life, we will rediscover public virtue and a new vision of the common good.

The Venetians' language and way of thinking set them aside from the rest of Italy. They are an island people, linked to the sea and to the tides rather than the land. This latest work from the incomparable Peter Ackroyd, like a magic gondola, transports its listeners to that sensual and surprising city. His account embraces facts and romance, conjuring up the atmosphere of the canals, bridges, and sunlit squares, the churches and the markets, the festivals and the flowers.

Historia
One of the great, but often unmentioned, causes of both happiness and misery is the quality of our environment: the kinds of chairs, walls, buildings, and streets that surround us. And yet, a concern for architecture is too often described as frivolous, even self-indulgent. Alain de Botton starts from the idea that where we are heavily influences who we can be, and argues that it is architecture's task to stand as an eloquent reminder of our full potential.

Historia
Are history books giving us the whole story? Or is civilization far more complex and for older than we have been taught? Our school textbooks barely mention the 6,000-year-old Sumerian civilization, yet the latest archaeological findings at sites such as Jericho, and most recently, Gobekli Tepe in Turkey, have been dated to 10,000 BC. Civilization goes back at least another 10,000 years, if we are willing to believe what our ancestors themselves claimed.

Historia
Around 6000 BC, a revolution took place on Orkney and the Western Isles of Scotland. An outstanding collection of stone circles, standing stones, round towers, and passage mounds appeared seemingly out of nowhere. And yet many such monuments were not indigenous to Britain, but to regions of the Caspian Sea and the Mediterranean. Their creators were equally mysterious. Traditions tell of the Papae and Peti, "strangers from afar" who were physically different, dressed in white tunics, and lived aside from the regular population.

The purpose of Why Architecture Matters is to "come to grips with how things feel to us when we stand before them, with how architecture affects us emotionally as well as intellectually" - with its impact on our lives. Modern Man is a penetrating psychological portrait of a true genius and constant self-inventor, as well as a sweeping tale filled with exotic locales, sex and celebrity (he was a lover of Josephine Baker), and high-stakes projects. In Flint's telling, Corbusier isn't just the grandfather of modern architecture but a man who sought to remake the world according to his vision, dispelling the Victorian style and replacing it with something never seen before.

Overview of the Subject of Architecture
I have been on a project to read 100 books. Probably 10 of them have been the DK Books. They are all great. I am glad that I found them. I learned that while architecture is not exactly my greatest interest, a lot goes into it including functionality, appearance and environmental footprint. I am sure that architects have their share of troubles nowadays with trying to be economical, environmental and profitable.
