Clara and Willis are Amish newlyweds in Unity, Maine who have fallen deep in both love and financial hardship.
Willis has started a new carpentry business with his brother, but they are barely getting enough customers to get by.
Clara, with her nimble fingers and a heart full of passion, channels her creativity into sewing magnificent, intricately crafted quilts for the local tourist shop, but because they are so time consuming, she can only make so many quilts per month.
With Christmas approaching, Clara and Willis mutually decide not to exchange gifts, but Clara secretly wants to get a saddle for Willis that he has been admiring at the local tack store for his beloved horse, Magi. However, saddles are costly.
Clara is devastated when the base frame cracks on her non-electric, antique treadle sewing machine, so Willis secretly plans to buy a replacement base frame for his wife’s gift so she can continue quilting. The problem is that the family heirloom was passed down from her grandmother and is no longer manufactured, so the replacement part will cost a pretty penny.
With Christmas just around the corner, how will they possibly manage to save up enough to buy each other a gift?
Determined to make each other smile on Christmas morning, they each make the ultimate sacrifice, but the process leads to heartbreak, devastation, and further financial hardships.
