Now, the institution of the family exists inside an insular world, and yet is a microcosm of the outside world, having a distinct form and constantly building structure; its own cycle of life, of birth and death, and renewal; its own distinct pulse, its own distinct personality; upheavals and disasters, relapses and rescues; defeats and celebrations; its own emotional rhythms and special language, replete with a vibrant melody and harmony, rhythm and tempo, and dynamics; customs and hierarchies, norms and values; a reward and punishment system; favoritism toward some and prejudice against others; betrayal against some and loyalty toward others; harsh condemnation that shows no mercy, and forgiveness that spreads its shimmering wings to heal the emotionally afflicted; and as each member seeks equilibrium during this complex process of close interaction with each other, they are absolutely unique to all other families. This is a story of just one American family of the 1960's, and how it struggles to survive and even flourish in its homestead, while also observing and sometimes experiencing the cataclysmic change in society: the burning down of old conventions and establishments and throwing off of the old guard; and from this ashen soil, witnessing the birth of a new way of living and soaring freedom that forever changed the world.
