Thankfully it was short

It seemed like an American attempt at Vanity Fair and just didn't really hold me. Its a classic, it has some points but ...

As far as the performance, it was ok but it was very jarring at the start of each chapter (and there are many chapters, mostly short ones) to hear Title, Author, Chapter number since at the end of the previous chapter I was told it was the end of Chapter x. Not very good for the flow of the Narration.

Awesome was like a bystander

Mostly a documentary of culture of the elite rich in New York in the 19th century. The love they had for each other but the life they were not allowed to live together.

This was a fascinating historical book by Ms. Wharton and it really shows the reader all the ins and outs of the way things where back then. It is the wonderful voice of narrator Elizabeth Klett that really brings New York and all the characters alive in the book, I don't think it is a book I would have ever read but listening to Ms. Klett narrate this book brought me into New York like I was a bystander, watching it all happen that was so cool, thank you!

Great performance but the Chapters aren't right!

Any additional comments?

I loved listening to the book. Klett's voice was good and she did a good job reading the dialogue. However, I made copious notes as I read. When I went to transfer my annotations to the printed text, the chapters did not match up at all.

Great Read!

This book surprised me; Ms. Wharton has exquisite detail in her writing. I really enjoyed the book. Being a sociologist, I really enjoyed the vivid detail of upper class life in an era that is long passed.

unexpected

I was afraid this was a timepiece that hadn't aged well but was pleasantly surprised how I was quickly drawn in. The ending was particularly good I thought.

Buyer beware!!

Any additional comments?

Listeners should be aware that this version has been taken from a free public domain recording that was never intended to be sold. It is available at Librivox . org for free. The publishers have taken it from that site and had no part in its production. I recorded it for LibriVox, not for Audible. Elizabeth Klett
