Reseñas editoriales

Listeners are becoming more and more discriminating about the fidelity of the audio production, as well as the artistry of the performance. Norman Dietz's 1991 interpretation is at a listenable speed, and Recorded Books' acclaimed level of audio fidelity is definitely present. The immediacy of the voice produces an intimacy with the story. Dietz does not merely read; he interprets and gives life to the story. He portrays a very sympathetic and believable Huckleberry. His other vocal characterizations, however, particularly the real Phelps brother and the slave Jim, could be more realistic. Norman Dietz's professional performance offers us interpretive substance through his credible and kind Huckleberry.

Resumen del Editor

Young Huck is an industrious, fiercely independent boy who escapes his abusive, drunken father and sets out on an unforgettable journey down the Mississippi River. Enjoying his freedom, he befriends a kindhearted slave named Jim, whose suffering teaches Huck powerful lessons about racism, personal liberty, and the complexities of life. Revolutionary for its realistic dialogue and uncompromising plot, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is arguably the greatest of all American novels, and a powerful sequel to Mark Twain's lighthearted classic, Tom Sawyer.

Brilliant Performance of Classic Book

You don't need me to tell you that this is a book everyone should read. The beautiful and intricate use of language is breathtaking - it is really a very long poem.

The performance is perfect. The narrator has clearly studied the subtlety different shade of language used in the book for each character and gives each life. I cannot recommend this performance enough.

Norman Dietz is the Best Twain narrator

What made the experience of listening to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn the most enjoyable?

I've listened to two Mark Twain books read by this narrator, and I can't imagine a more perfect way of expressing the great writer. He brings each character and dialect alive. Wonderful

Best performance of a true classic

This book requires deep study of various regional dialects and razor-sharp comic pronunciation. This reader does an amazing job and that makes this the definitive version.

A classic recording of a classic work!

I used to listen to this recording on cassette during summer vacations, sitting cross-legged on the basement floor, pawing through Legos. As an adult, I think that I enjoy Deitz's performance even more than as a child. To me, Twain is Deitz!

one of the best

The work itself, and the reader are excellent. Problems with Audible version is a) sound quality is not very good, and b) there are no chapters in this version; just one long, 11 hour track.

Shocking and Ineffective these days.

I have heard this book was meant to satirize slavery. Yet it seems too far beyond decency for todays reader, or at least me. It just keeps racism alive for me.
it is a fun read I guess, but it ought not to be. It is kind of insulting to everybody.

an american heart, broken but resilient

allegedly, twain toured the south many years after the civil war
the trip broke his heart, as he saw how little the region had changed
he became despondent, thinking "...all that suffering was for naught..."

it was that despair, that prompted him to write a companion to Tom Sawyer
he turned his sadness and anger into our first and truest american voice
the 2 basic american themes : slavery (race) and frontier (space) are joined

twain's tone is bold, funny, sarcastic, sentimental, angry, kind and irreverent
he simply refuses to apologize, for even one minute, for being an american
we're not a footnote to the old world, he says, we have our own greatness

the narration, by norman dietz, is exceptional in each of the many voices
twain's humor makes the bitter pill of his social commentary easier to swallow
each time i read the book, it makes me tearfully proud to be an american
