Do you know any drug addicts or alcoholics?
As an ex junky I wrote this book to help addicts and their devastated families. Throughout my two decades of sobriety, I've been working with those still in the trenches and the folks caught in their orbit, trying to solve the riddle of an unstoppable addict. Why would a person do something so harmful to themself and the ones they love? Are they a disaster because they're on drugs, or on drugs because they were a disaster? The drugs are usually just a symptom of a bigger problem. This problem or malady doesn't just manifest itself as a drug addiction; it can also come in the form of: criminal behaviour, eating disorders, gambling problems, anxiety, depression etc.
So what can we do? How do we identify the root causes? The answers to these questions are usually buried deep within- we just have to get our hands dirty and do some digging. This book is your shovel, no sponsors or meetings needed. In this book I'll share my story and walk you through a program with a different approach to life and recovery.
Let's get started.

a story of overcoming all the odds against so many dangers!
A great story about overcoming addiction and the mean streets of Los Angeles! Very inspirational book that is reminiscent of Charles Bukowski's skid row experiences. The vagrant that makes it out of the trenches! Much respect to the author 👏

Anyone Can Benefit From This Book✨
This book reopened my eyes to the limitless possibilities of growth I could experience in my life. It’s inspiring to hear a story of a life of struggle and addiction turn into a life of success and triumph over some of the hardest battles one could endure. This book made me laugh and cry. It also put what really matters into perspective. It solidified the idea that anyone who has the willingness to change, can do so when they put in the necessary work. He masterfully puts into place a simple program for anyone wanting to make positive changes and have a better way of life. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to be the best version of themselves.

Big Truths
After listening to the audible, I had to purchase the hard copy. As a therapist, substance abuse professional, educator, and recovery advocate, my opinion is that this book is a valuable tool for anyone looking to understand the life of an addict, the treatment industry, and self-help groups and process. It’s also a valuable tool for those looking to make a change or anyone looking to help someone they care about.

Poignant and Powerful
This book is the sharing of the trials and tribulations experienced by one recovered addict, his words of guidance to others not yet in recovery, and guidance for their families. He shares possible root causes and steps to take.
The author, Richard Galvan, shares his journey through drug addiction, highlighting its impact—criminal behavior, mental health disorders, depression, isolation, and more. Avoiding a victim mentality, he reflects on the personal causes of his actions and behaviors. His writing is raw, inspirational, and resonates deeply with readers, offering genuine advice to addicts and their loved ones.
Also serving as the narrator, Richard Galvan, speaks clearly and from the heart, making the message more impactful. His voice conveys tone and emotion authentically, bringing his words and experiences to life as he recalls his journey.
Galvan’s words are poignant and powerful—essential for anyone facing addiction or supporting a loved one through it.

The book is amazing, as a SUD outpatient owner, I could definitely relate to 80% of was he was saying, the other 20% was definitely something I can build on in my personal experiences. This book THE ADDICT is a must must , especially if you are involved in the recovery world of Substance Abuse.

Captivating and raw bravery through addiction
This book truly spoke to me. I was hooked the moment I began listening to Richard’s real and raw story to freedom. As a fellow addict, I found so many differences and even more similarities while his story unfolded. What stood out most was “the one size doesn’t fit all” mentality in recovery. His ability to take and utilize different aspects of sobriety through out years of recovery truly changed something in me, as I have had my own struggles with the idea of their only being one specific way of remaining sober. This was affirming and educational.
We all have different lows, rock-bottoms, and experiences- especially in sobriety- But the struggles remain the same. I thank the author for sharing his vulnerable story and reminding us all of the brutality of addiction, but even more, of the miracle of recovery. To any fellow addict or loved one of an addict- SHARE this story and hope.
