The night was open, the possibilities were endless.
Until I got a call from Detective Braxton Wilcox.
“Hey, Storm. We need you.”
That was Braxton. All business. No attempt to engage in small talk. No pretense. A lot different from his brother, Liam – my ex-husband.
“Who is we, Braxton?” I asked. I already knew. Braxton worked with the Los Angeles Major Crimes Division. If he was calling, someone was dead.
“Is that my brother?” asked Liam, my cat. Yes, he was a cat. Liam had become my ex when I discovered that he couldn’t keep his hands and other body parts off of every woman who walked into his life. He had become a cat when one of those women, a witch, a very powerful witch from Downey, discovered Liam’s propensity to cheat. She punished him by changing him into a cat. A large, orange tabby. Regrettably, she couldn’t turn him back into a human. He would have to do that by becoming a more decent and considerate person.
Liam purred insistently. “You can’t do anything with him, Ava. Tell him you’re busy. You haven’t fed me yet.”
Yep, Liam was going to be stuck as a cat for a pretty long time.
“We have a body, Storm. In Long Beach. Long Beach PD requested our help. It looks like it might be something you can help with. It’s ruled an animal attack—shark is the current favorite culprit--but I don’t think so. I think it might be something more.”
