Acerca de esta escucha
For centuries the gospels have been cherished devotional literature, and under the guidance of preachers and priests, they’ve been understood as reliable depictions of Jesus. But even the most devout Christians stumble across sayings of Jesus that don’t sound quite right. In fact - if we’re honest - some of them are alarming. I discovered a few of these verses when I was a kid, but Jesus was our lord and savior, so I didn’t let it bother me too much.
a
How can this not be food for thought? What are the implications of this major downside of the gospels? It takes a certain level of bravery - frankly, curiosity and courage are required - to examine everything that Jesus taught. This audiobook is designed to help with that adventure. (David Madison)

Seth Andrews wasn't an idiot during his 30 years as an evangelical Christian. He wasn't unintelligent, nor did his IQ shift when he ultimately left religion entirely. He considered himself thoughtful, moral, reasonable, and at least as smart as the average person. In other words, he wasn't an idiot. Yet strangely, he often sounded like one.

Seth Andrews idolized Rush Limbaugh. He listened to Glenn Beck. He read Ann Coulter. He watched Fox News. He was an evangelical Christian once tethered to right-wing media, which constantly warned of an attack on American values by liberals and secular humanists. Today, Seth is a liberal and secular humanist. This audiobook explores the Fox News culture, which both reflects and informs American conservatism, shaping public opinion on important issues like religion, government, race, foreign policy, war, protest, LGBT rights, and the Constitution.

Historia
The assumption that Jesus existed as a historical person has occasionally been questioned in the course of the last hundred years or so, but any doubts that have been raised have usually been put to rest in favor of imagining a blend of the historical, the mythical, and the theological in the surviving records of Jesus. Historian and philosopher Richard Carrier reexamines the whole question and finds compelling reasons to suspect the more daring assumption is correct.

Religious fundamentalists and biblical literalists present any number of arguments that attempt to disprove evolution. Those with a sympathetic ear often fail to critically examine these creationist claims, leading to an ill-informed public and, perhaps more troubling, ill-advised public policy. As Aron Ra makes clear, however, every single argument deployed by creationists in their attacks on evolution is founded on fundamental scientific, religious, and historical falsehoods - all of them.

Historia
The scholarship of theology and religion teaches us that the God of the Bible was without a body, only revealing himself in the Old Testament in words mysteriously uttered through his prophets, and in the New Testament in the body of Christ. The portrayal of God as corporeal and masculine is seen as merely metaphorical, figurative, or poetic. But, in this revelatory study, Francesca Stavrakopoulou presents a vividly corporeal image of God: a human-shaped deity who walks and talks and weeps and laughs, who eats, sleeps, feels, and breathes, and who is undeniably male.

Historia
This explosive work of history unearths clues that finally demonstrate the truth about one of the world's great religions: that it was born out of the conflict between the Romans and messianic Jews who fought a bitter war with each other during the first century. The Romans employed a tactic they routinely used to conquer and absorb other nations: they grafted their imperial rule onto the religion of the conquered.

Historia
Dr. Richard Carrier, world-renowned philosopher and historian, explains the four reasons he does not accept the Christian religion, describing four facts of the world that, had they been different, he would believe. Those four reasons are God's silence, God's inaction, the lack of evidence, and the way the universe looks exactly like a godless universe would, and not at all like a Christian universe would, even down to its very structure. Dr. Carrier addresses all the usual replies to these claims.

It is often said, even by critical scholars who should know better, that “writing in the name of another” was widely accepted in antiquity. But New York Times bestselling author Bart D. Ehrman dares to call it what it was: literary forgery, a practice that was as scandalous then as itis today. In Forged, Ehrman’s fresh and original research takes readers back to the ancient world, where forgeries were used as weapons by unknown authors to fend off attacks to their faith and establish their church.

The early Christian Church was a chaos of contending beliefs. Some groups of Christians claimed that there was not one God but two or twelve or thirty. Some believed that the world had not been created by God but by a lesser, ignorant deity. Certain sects maintained that Jesus was human but not divine, while others said he was divine but not human.

In this first book of his Ten Tough Problems series, David Madison shares three critical problems in Christian belief. Problem One: God is invisible and silent. This fact forces humanity to rely on ineffective ways of knowing God — common knowledge, sacred books, visions, prayer, personal feelings, and theologians. But all these sources of God knowledge fall short as evidenced by a world of disagreement, not just between Christians and other religions, but within Christianity itself.

Jesus the jerk
The author gently explores the myriad of problems and inconsistencies in the 4 texts that are the foundation of Christianity. He goes to great effort to encourage believers to reread their “sacred” screeds. John’s inventions as an example are compared to the oldest text Mark. Clearly this author infused a harsher and more vindictive Jesus with long stories with no historic background. He points out that anti semitism was given full voice by John.
There are references to the many authors who have questioned historicity of Jesus.
In the end he considers why the all knowing god would not have left us with a clear non contradictory story. Why forgiveness could not have been granted without a human sacrifice. And why this healer being all knowing wouldn’t have relieved suffering by explaining germ theory at some point?
This is a quick read with good references aimed I think at believers. It is always a pleasure to spend a couple hours with a scholar who is willing to highlight the hubris in the actual texts that two billion people cling to. If as a believer you are willing to take his challenge at the end I suspect you will at least be able to release the belief that every word is from God.

Wonderful exploration of my own problems
I live in a very red state where I am constantly assailed by exhortations to follow Jesus and be saved. The problem I saw first was that few of the sects of Christianity understand the idea of "being saved" as the same thing. I actually read Bible as a teen, and then and there, realized, "This stuff can't be true."
I've done some investigation since then and realized my first impression had been correct. This book puts succinctly both the contradictions I had noticed and explained many more.
If you're an atheist, this book will support and expand your beliefs, If you're a Christian, please read this book to better understand your faith. If it's strong it should hold up under scrutinization and if it doesn't, maybe you should rethink things.

INFORMATIVE
I am listening to the book a second time in order to retain and discuss knowledgeably with my naive Christian friends. Tom Broome

How dare you!
This book is heresy, blasphemy, the very work of the devil himself… And I loved every word of it. Great work!

Great for the atheist book collection
I really enjoyed David’s work..and well Seth guided me to the dark side of the force with his book deconverted…David’s book thoroughly works through the Bible at a “in the trenches level” of those endless never ending Christian excuses and mis interpretations of the GOOD book…but I believe that holds true for ALL religions….in the sense all religious people make excuses for their own religion and GOOD books. Like the man said “religion poison’s everything “ ….this book is an excellent crash course in very effective verbal and knowledge judo.

Respectful and true
He presented his findings and beliefs without the appearance of bias. He let the evidence speak for itself.
