Acerca de esta escucha

Deeply funny, moving, and urgent writing about a country that can feel broken into pieces and the light that shines through the cracks, from Irish comedian Maeve Higgins, author of Maeve in America.

As an eternally curious outsider, Maeve Higgins can see that the United States is still an experiment. Some parts work well and others really don’t, but that doesn't stop her from loving the place and the people that make it. With piercing political commentary in a sweet and salty tone, these essays unearth answers to the questions we all have about this country we call home; the beauty of it all and the dark parts too.

Maeve attends the 2020 Border Security Expo to better understand the future of our borders, and finds herself at The Alamo surrounded by queso and homemade rifles. A chance encounter with a statue of a teenage horseback rider causes her to interrogate the purpose of monuments, this sends her hurtling through the past, connecting Ireland’s revolutionary history with the struggles of Black Americans today. And after mistaking edibles for innocent candies, Maeve gets way too high at Paper Source.

Most of all, Maeve wants to leave this country and this planet better than she found it. That may well be impossible, but it certainly means showing love. Lots of it, even when it's difficult to do so. Threaded through these pieces is love for strangers, love for friends who show up right on time, love for trees, love for Tom Hardy, love for those with differing opinions, love for the glamorous older women of Brighton Beach with tattooed eyeliner and gold jewelry, love for everybody on this train.

Maeve ties it all together with an engaging diatribe about an immigrant’s love for New York and this country.

Simply Wonderful

As a long time listener to "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me", I was introduced to Maeve Higgins not too long ago. Delightfully ditzy & apparently ignorant to world news, she was a funny and oft times infuriating presence on the show. After listening to this collection of essays I can tell you she is one bright woman. Not only is she well versed in American & World history & culture, but she can even cite sources. Like a modern day Toqueville, she looks at her adopted country with a foreigner's perspective, sometimes insightful, often funny, never dull and in the final two minutes of the last chapter, tearfully poignant.

This was a beautiful read on ugly realities of America. Worth reading twice. With hope.

a perfect collection of insights by an imperfect person striving to understand her place in her adopted home but with a perspective that only a fresh set of eyes from outside the family can bring. Can't wait for the next.

Maeve does it again!

Her games is an immigrant from Ireland and her take on American society Gives us a fresh perspective on things that we take for granted. She is sometimes surprised, sometimes incredulous sometimes incredulous, what always but always point us toward facts and universal truths that we need to remember as human beings. The book is a series of S a's, awesome about her personal life, and some about societal issues.

Funny, touching, and thoughtful.

Thank you for this brilliant, informative, often funny, often tragic, but always hopeful and beautiful ride through the U.S. The best book I have listened to. In fact, I’m going to restart it now.

Thank you

No one writes quite like Maeve Higgins. Effortlessly slaloming between pop culture references and excerpts from scholarly people, Higgins does an amazing job reflecting a modern perspective and finding deep questions (and some answers) in the events of ordinary life. Her humor is well known; her philosophy peeks through here enough to make for a compelling listen, especially in her distinctive and charming voice.

For fans & non-fans. Funny and wide-ranging.

I love Higgins’ accent and sense of humor so this was enjoyable. It starts lighthearted and progresses to address overwhelming issues of the time. It gets deep fast, but it’s utterly important to speak in these things.

A pleasure and a power
