Acerca de esta escucha
Fans of Scott Telek’s film writing have come to expect an irreverent, insightful and often outrageously funny take on films from the good to the very, very bad. The tradition continues in this fourth volume, archiving 43 movie reviews in the horror genre, all beginning with the letter D.
It turns out the letter D is a good one for horror, as it contains the words “Dead,” “Don’t,” “Demon” and “Dracula.” And if you were trapped on a desert island with these movies (as well as fresh water, food and a TV and DVD player!) you would actually be doing pretty well, as many fine horror movies begin with the letter D. Also a lot of great bad and cheesy movies, and also some truly awful ones, but as usual, Scott Telek makes reading about bad movies enjoyable with his inimitable wit and style.
Not only does this volume cover Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, on the shortlist of greatest horror films ever made, and its remake, but you get numerous Dracula films, many of the “Don’t” movies, including the notorious Don’t Answer the Phone, the original TV movie Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and it’s horrendous remake, and unexpected horror comedy delights Don’t Open ’Til Christmas and Deadtime Stories.
There are great movies like Cronenberg’s The Dead Zone and De Palma’s Dressed To Kill, and a serious contender for worst film ever made, Dreamcatcher. Also included are curiosities like Death Bed: The Bed That Eats and The Dark.
You may find some fun movies to watch, or you just may have some good laughs, but you’ll plunge into a world when film was still interesting, the individual and idiosyncratic creations of directors, not committee-approved content intended to fill time on streaming services. Enjoy!
