Newly liberated Lithuania can be an unpredictable kind of place. Some embrace the opportunities that are unfolding, but it’s difficult to thrive amongst the chaos and corruption.

Jurate embarks on a trader’s adventure. She travels to markets and kiosks pitching her wares, but these are dangerous times. There’s a price to be paid for taking chances. Darius is also pitching – he wants to drive his country into the European Union, but as a government minister, his priorities are about to be challenged. Life can be trying even for the Nouveau Riche - Vana struggles with motherhood and finding meaning in this new order.

In a land filled with tears, these are turbulent times but there’s still hope. There is always hope in shadows.

Thrilling story

Loved the story of life in Lithuania and one woman’s struggles and successes.
The virtual voice reading the book provided a lot of confusion because it mispronounced characters names, locations and foods. Jūratė is mispronounced several ways and I thought there were several characters with similar names until I figured it out.
However the story and writing is magnificent and I highly recommend it.
