This anthology takes readers on a bold journey through its thirteen chapters, exploring
the dynamic intersection of pedagogy and andragogy, learner psychology, digital
innovation, and inclusive approaches within the Further Education (FE) landscape.
It does this by weaving together research studies on SMART targets, trauma-
informed teaching methods, and the integration of gamification to boost learner
engagement. Furthermore, classroom-based inquiries investigate the transformative
power of digital learning, the tactile benefits of handwriting, and the invaluable
role of assessment, behaviour management, and career readiness. Each chapter
contributes to a holistic vision of education that is both inclusive and future-focused.
At the heart of this book is New City College’s Teaching and Learning Lab,
spearheaded by Ruth Kendrick. This pioneering initiative reimagines pedagogy and
andragogy by positioning lecturers, learning support assistants, and business support
staff as co-researchers and, thus, co-creators of knowledge. Together as a team,
they are committed to dismantling social barriers to learning through collaborative,
cross-disciplinary research and developmental, supported experiment cycles that
bridge theory and practice. Guiding the Lab’s vision is Gerry McDonald CBE, Group
Principal and CEO of New City College, who recently called for greater flexibility in
qualification design to meet the ever-changing demands of the skills industry. His
leadership reinforces the Lab’s mission: to cultivate research-informed educational
environments that ensure learners are confidently future-ready.
This book is a powerful testament to how meaningful educational research can
