DS Oliver Cole’s latest case sees him having to deal with multiple issues, beginning with the arrival of a new Detective Constable, Kip Kennedy, fresh from Hendon College. And whilst dealing with Kip, he’s also reflecting on the break-up of his recent relationship with Megan Blanchfield and wondering what’s going on with the breakdown of his colleague DC Debbie Swan’s marriage.
Oliver has little time to dwell on these matters however before he’s asked to attend the discovery of a body on the beach at Seaton Sluice. He sees this as a welcome respite from his personal worries, but within minutes of his arrival to look over the crime scene, things take an unexpected turn and Oliver is asked, once again, to lead the investigation.
With his head now in a more comfortable place, he quickly discovers that the victim is a local doctor, Victoria Pearson, and that her personal situation and the dynamics of her family life open up a number of leads in the hunt for her killer.
His colleague, DC Debbie Swan, is again asked to accompany Oliver as acting DS, but she also is dealing with personal issues, not least the continuing separation from her husband Ian, and the fact that she is very busy studying for her Sergeants exams.
The case leans heavily on the teams ability to gather information about Dr Pearson, her work at the RVI A&E department, her troublesome family, and other equally disturbing issues that come to light as the investigation continues.
Oliver struggles to put together the pieces of the jigsaw, his attention sometimes pulled away to dwell on personal relationships and the pressure of his own studies to become a DI.
As suspects are identified, and then quickly dismissed, Oliver is in danger of letting the killer slip through his hands, unless he can put aside all his concerns and focus on the case.
