Acerca de esta escucha

“I always call in, when in New York, to see Ernest who, despite the loss of part of a leg in the 1914-1918 war, manages to keep moving about all day. I had only a brief chat with him on a recent occasion, as he was booked for months ahead and our gossip came in a pupil’s time. Ernest still uses his original penknife with a loop at one end, to which he attaches a silk handkerchief and which he swings to and fro to demonstrate that, if he jerks the hands, it stops the free swing of the pendulum and does not make the end go faster. Ernest has been expounding the gospel of swing, not hit, for many, many years. I do not think the golfing world in general disagrees with Ernest. They cannot; his idea that the hands are even 90% of the game can be true, but his doctrine ends abruptly, because he does not go the step further and tell his pupils HOW to use their hands better in order to advance in their golf. I find that most of my pupils have a swing. There is one point about a golf-swinging action which is overlooked, and which I did just mention to Ernest in our brief chat; I felt he disagreed. While Ernest laughs at the thought of the lever or buffer action being present in the swing, I am satisfied it exists, and can be taught to improve the muscles of the hands and arms. You can go on swinging a club till you are blue in the face and never gain a yard in length unless you work on the ‘heart of the swing’ - the just-before-and-after-impact section. This cannot be glossed over.” - HENRY COTTON, 1959. OPEN CHAMPION (BRITISH OPEN) 1934, 1937 AND 1948 Golf
