Only a few short months after humanity's first interstellar flights, the first shots have been fired in what will eventually become known as the Alliance Wars.

Terran Fleet Command teeters on the edge of chaos in the aftermath of Chairwoman Crull's removal from power, while in space, Earth's defense falls squarely on the shoulders of Admiral Kevin Patterson. With only a small number of ships capable of bringing the fight to the enemy, he makes the bold decision to divide his forces, meeting the Resistance task force head-on at two separate locations.

Captain Tom Prescott and crew aboard the destroyer Theseus meet with initial success on the battlefield, only to be faced with the arrival of a warship completely out of her class - armed with weapons for which she is not prepared.

As the Resistance task force makes its final approach to Earth, a new ally warns of the horrors that will be visited on our homeworld if the coming attack succeeds. In the meantime, the enigmatic Guardian watches and waits, noncommittal as to its role as a protector or a mere observer.

Yet hope remains - as a friend of humanity finally comes to grips with his destiny.

So the Resistance task force makes its final approach to Earth, and Admiral Patterson has to ready earth's defenses for them. But will the Guardian be a help or hindrance? I am loving listen to this series.

A book needs to give you catharsis and a sense of completion. The pace is glacial and much more can be done. A finished and well paced and edited manuscript would leave listeners more satisfied and not waiting for a cliffhanger resolution after three books. We end up knowing almost nothing after investing in three books, and will there be nine more just to complete an epic story. The incidents take one battle and stretch it to forever when I think the plot could move further and there could be more development of characters other than showing good officers doing their duty. Look to the Warship series to witness how a trilogy can show more affect and plot, or the Drysine Legacy books. Good writing, but frustrating. You want development, turns, with more frequency. Autgr is good, but I wish he would compress more and present more intrigue and relationships along with constant heroics and turnarounds. My subjective take. But a promising author. You learn more with books like this then with others. I still recommend the books, but hope the author will begin to increase the pace and density of his overall story instead of spending entire books, even two, on one battle, or half a book on a launch sequence. That's unfair but you get the idea. If he takes this series into a great new area and created an edited omnibus version of these prior books, it will all be fantastic space opera.

Good, but too much of a tease.

For those who like "hard", technical or military science fiction this will be an enjoyable addition to their library. The only problem I have is the constant use of exponentials in describing distances. The author should have used something simpler, like "light-seconds" for describing the distances in space and giving a quick introduction of the idea at the beginning of each book. Other than that, I think this series and this book stands up there with the Honor Harrington and Ky Vatta, "Trading in Danger" series.

Another great sequel in the Terran Fleet Command s

Truly enjoyed this space navy yarn. Gripping battle scenes, engaging universe-building, and a fairly well developed array of antagonists and protagonists. Not big on relationships, but morality is a major element of plot development. Well done!

Ongoing excellent military sci-fi

Pretty good series. I wish they were longer. If they combined two books for one credit, I would be very satisfied. Narrator can get a little dry, but I expect that with military story.

Entertaining military sci-fi
