Awesome finale!

Sundered Moon was a very solid conclusion to this epic fantasy tale that brought everything together in a satisfying way and recontextualized what came before once we learned all the intriguing lore. It had me itching for more books in the world, so I’m going to jump on the prequel novella and hope that there is more to come.

I loved the Ahmeralanche sprint to the finish that rivaled some of Sanderson’s own multi-POV climactic final acts with how propulsive it was across different locations while still connecting everything in a way that felt like a real convergence. Ahmer is not afraid to get gritty and raise the stakes at any moment, and he went BIG with this finale in a way that I just loved. While the series can be slightly cynical at times, the overarching sensibility is still one of hope/fighting for the good, which is a particular point along the noble-bright/grimdark spectrum I really connect to.

Ahmer did quite the job in bringing the various male POV characters to vivid life here. The new POV we got in this book became my favorite, in addition to a few that I had already connected to. Like Joe Abercrombie from the First Law trilogy, something Ahmer can work on going forward is matching the 3D male POVs with some more fleshed out female ones. The two female POVs never fully came to life for me, and I’d probably say the same for most of the non-POV side characters. For a debut series though, that’s a small quibble and I come out of this utterly impressed by Ahmer’s creativity, dramatic sensibility, and writing chops. He is a force to be reckoned with in modern epic fantasy, and I can’t wait to see what he cooks up next.

A whirlwind.

I love the first book. This felt a little rushed mostly because there is so much fantastic detail in the first book that tying it up was an epic effort. This is dark, which I love, complex, which I adore, and intense which my gut hates. All in all this is a fabulous story with a very satisfying conclusion.
Great narration.
