Summer is a time of discovery for all at the Anderson house. Patrick's brother, Pal comes to stay with a neighbor down the street. Pal proves that he is everything that Patrick isn't. Joe's family enrolls Patrick in obedience school, giving Joe an opportunity to work with the wayward setter, even as Pal shines with his own mastery of the trainer' s commands. Joe also enrolls in summer school, to make up a credit he failed during the regular school season. It is on a weekend fishing trip that Pal, Patrick and Joe are put to the test when faced with a danger much greater than themselves. For Pal, bravery comes with a price. For Patrick, that price comes with a sacrifice. And Joe realizes that not all of life's answers come from a book; some come from life experiences. What can a wayward setter teach a boy about the lessons that life has put into his path?
