Practical Insights on Burnout Prevention, Recovery, and Stress Management

One of the most underestimated resources in our lives is emotional energy. It's foundational to every area of a healthy life. But a person struggling with burnout is running out of that energy, stuck with the disorienting and anxiety-provoking feelings of failure, shame, and depression. The good news is that now we have more knowledge than ever on managing stress to prevent or recover from burnout.

Combining psychological studies with biblical insight, pastor and psychology professor Jonathan Hoover gives you the practical tools you need to assess your susceptibility to stress-induced breakdowns; learn highly effective coping strategies for preventing and overcoming burnout; understand that burnout is a natural and shame-free battle for most leaders; and more.

You are not defenseless against the hazards of unregulated stress. Here is your guide to reclaim control of your life and win the battle against burnout.

Having the privilege of attending and volunteering at the Church that Doctor/Pastor Hoover mentions in his book, I have had the privilege of speaking with him on a few occasions. I remember the sermon he preached the weekend when he debuted his book. I remember thinking to myself how talented the Hoover family is and how much I love their ability to speak to anyone who’s going through something in life that may not be a common conversation or something that one feels not to share. In my case, burnout. I remember sitting in the sanctuary feeling like Jonathan was speaking directly to me. I remember feeling the convection of the Lord telling me to “change course and seek to me”. Dr. Hoover was signing his book in the foyer of the church near the bookstore on campus, and I remember telling myself, “I need to buy this book”, but felt ashamed that I could be vulnerable and feared what people of the congregation would think of me, as again, I volunteer at the church and have made lots of friends and colleagues. As time went on, I refused to admit that I was tapping out in my professional and personal life. I truly put full stock into the “What doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger” outlook and it was pedal to the metal. “Let’s hammer down and get through today”. What I didn’t realize was over time “limp mode” kicked in and was left stranded on the side of the road. The career that I loved became a hindrance, my relationship with my wife and kids became an emotional roller coaster, it was easier to not care, not interact, not show any emotion at all. To my family, if I was happy, it was strange, if I was mad and angry, the wife and kids had to walk on eggshells. It wasn’t until a very close family friend, fellow public safety official, and member of our church came to me and sent me the link to the book via Audible. Understanding what I was going through, as he himself battled the same, told me to listen to this book. This allowed me to listen while driving to work, working out, or doing lawn work. This book came at just the right time for my family and I. I took both this book and scriptures to heart and had a real long look in the mirror. Understanding that in order for Dr. Hoover’s spiritual, and clinical advice to work, I need to take it in like a medicine. Since finishing this book, I have taken time ON my family, taken some time OFF from work, dropped tasks that didn’t contribute to my spiritual, financial, or emotional wellbeing. While I still work for the same public safety department, I have accepted a new role within the department to allow me the opportunity to be home more and to help me with the burnout caused by the daily grind of the profession. I truly want to thank Doctor and my Associate Pastor Jonathan Hoover for taking the time to write this book because he’s taken someone who I consider is stuck in their ways and extremely stressed and stubborn, and turned him into someone who took the time to leave this review.
