Stoicism is widely known to originate as Hellenistic philosophy in Athens in 300 BCE.
The term Stoicism came from Stoa Poikile, which is also known as a painted porch. This is an open market found in Athens where original Stoics met and used to teach philosophy.
Eventually, Stoicism moved to Rome. It significantly flourished during the empire period, being alternatively persecuted by the emperors who were against it, like the Domitian and Vespasian, and embraced openly by the emperors who tried living by this philosophy.
Marcus Aurelius was the most prominent Stoic. Stoicism influenced Christianity and many other well-known philosophical figures all through the ages.
