This is a beautifully written book, rich with cultural nuance and deeply engaging. While the narrator is clearly talented and experienced, her voice unfortunately does not suit this particular work. The narration is marred by frequent mispronunciations of vernacular words, which significantly detracts from the listening experience. Most notably, the protagonist’s name, Eshile, is repeatedly mispronounced, undermining the authenticity and emotional resonance of the story.

This critique is not a reflection of the narrator’s overall ability, but rather a recognition that this book demands a narrator who is intimately familiar with the language and cultural context. I sincerely recommend that the publisher consider a re-recording with a native South African voice actor who can bring the appropriate sensitivity, accuracy, and depth to the narration.
