Edward is initiated into a tradition that bridges the gap between science and the sacred. Using an ancient, bioluminescent mycelium—the "Bread of the Angels"—the Stewards transcend linear time to witness the patterns of the past and the inevitable shadows of the future. But there is a catch: The Stewards must never interfere. They are the observers, the chroniclers, and the keepers of the flame. They do not stop the winter; they ensure that the seeds of spring survive it.

As London burns under the Blitz and the world descends into the madness of total war, Edward must choose between his human desire to change the course of history and his sacred duty to preserve the wisdom that will be needed when the wheel turns again.
