Robert Creamer
One of the most endearing of American heroes, Casey Stengel guided the New York Yankees to ten pennants in twelve seasons. Here is the brilliant manager stripped naked - the person underneath all the clowning, mugging, and double-talking.
Robert Creamer shows us Casey at twenty-two, famous from his very first day in the big leagues. We see Casey's playing career fall apart as he is traded, shunted to last-place teams, hampered by injuries, considered finished - until he bats a glorious home run in the 1923 World Series. Here are Casey's managing successes and failures - dismissed by the Yankees, he returns to the limelight with his new and inept New York Mets, the team he single-handedly lifts into the nation's consciousness. "I'm a man that's been up and down," Casey said in a serious moment. Certainly his knack for bouncing back made him a legend in our national pastime. Here are the stories and gags, the Stengelian style, the full dimensions of the man.

Would you consider the audio edition of Stengel to be better than the print version?
Yes, mainly in part to Peter Coleman's narration which brought some life to the book for me.What was one of the most memorable moments of Stengel?
Casey's penchant to bring life to the game by his clowning during his playing years.Which character – as performed by Peter Coleman – was your favorite?
Due to this being a biographical work, Peter's entire performance of the book was very enjoyable. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Casey's abrupt departure from the Yankees after so many great years of managing.Any additional comments?
I had wanted to read this book ever since I had found out about it and I give Audible excellent kudos in bringing this book to audio. This was one of the most enjoyable biographies I have heard performed here on Audible. I extend a hearty thanks to them and would recommend this book to any sports enthusiast who enjoys hearing about one of the game of baseball's more colorful figures. The Old Professor
