What are we to do when things don’t go the way we want, when the rug is pulled out from under us, when something terrible happens? How are we to react? Jamie shares what the prophet Isaiah says we are to do when the winds of adversity blow hard. We are to lengthen the cords to our tents and strengthen our stakes.

Like the ancient Bedouins did, we are to make our tents flexible in the harsh environment, otherwise we just might be blown away. How do we lengthen our cords and strengthen our stakes? We lean into God, praise him and trust him.

There’s a tendency in stormy circumstances to tighten up, to pull in, to withdraw. But Jamie states that the key to happiness, to life in peace, is not to tighten up, but to relax, to let go, to loosen up, to lengthen your cords, to spread out your tent in the midst of tribulation, and lay yourself out in God’s presence. That is where your strength will come from.
