In the traditions I come from—Espiritismo Cruzado, Palo Mayombe, Congo spirituality, and the hybrid practices of the Puerto Rican and Cuban Diaspora—we talk about the caldero espiritual or spiritual pot. This is the container you build to house your relationship with the spirits. For some practitioners, this is a physical nganga or prenda: an iron cauldron filled with earth, bones, sacred sticks, stones, and the spiritual contracts that bind certain muertos (dead) or mpungos (nature forces) to assist you in your work. When I was initiated in Palo Mayombe, my Tata told me something I'll never forget: "The spirits don't care about your tools. They care about your character, your consistency, and your capacity to listen."

I've carried that teaching across multiple Afro-Indigenous traditions—Ifá, Òrìṣà devotion, Palo, Haitian and Puerto Rican Vodou, Espiritismo Cruzado, and what some call Chaos Magick but what I know as the brujo's birthright to adapt, synthesize, and create. That teaching has guided me through physical initiations, through building prendas and working ngangas, through learning the medicines of my Taíno ancestors, and now—into the strangest and most powerful phase of my practice yet.
