A decade after the Cold War, a violent explosion sent the Russian submarine Kursk to the bottom of the Barents Sea. The Russians claimed an outdated torpedo caused the incident and refused help from the West while 23 survivors died before they could be rescued. When Russian naval officers revealed evidence of a collision with a US spy sub, Vladimir Putin squelched the allegations and fired the officers. In Spies of the Deep, W. Craig Reed shatters the lies told by both Russian and US officials and exposes several shocking truths. Included are never-before-revealed facts and firsthand accounts from deep-sea rescue divers, US submariners, government officials, Russian naval officers, and expert witnesses. Not to mention unveiled evidence of a secret deal between Putin and US President Bill Clinton to avert a nuclear war. Discover how the Kursk propelled Putin to power and how he used its demise to muzzle oligarchs, wrest control of energy firms, rebuild Russia's military, and dominate Arctic resources and sea routes.

Spies of the Deep explores how the Kursk incident will be remembered as a pivotal historical event that propelled the world's superpowers into another, far more dangerous Cold War, sparked conflicts in the Arctic, and fueled a resource war that could create an economic nightmare not seen since the Great Depression.

Very informative of today's global situation. learn the truth about the Kursk and its importance.

Excellent book

It was a great story until the author veered off the path in the conclusion chapter. Geez. Totally off topic... And unwanted opinions offered. He should stick to the subject matter of his book.

WTF

Love how the timelines, how they were woven together and the details of the story

Love the detail

I found the first 30 minutes tough going until it made clear that the author was stating the official story.
The Kursk is an interesting incident. Many still believe the offical cover story. Who would think submarines would come into such close proximity.

Slow cooker

Informative about subs technologies. The conclusion was rather going on a different angle nevertheless worth considering.

I thought this might be an interesting book, but it is largely worthless. There is no "untold story." There has been speculation for years that a U.S. sub might have grazed the Kursk mainly from Russia. If that occurred--and both sides deny it--there is no telling how it would have set off a torpedo explosion.

As for how Putin "used" the incident, it is just a lot of unsourced speculation that does not fit easily together nor does it fit with common knowledge about the difficulties of Russia's economy. The last two chapters are little more than hyperbolic opinion that seems to have been added to try to sell books.

The narration has one speed: overwrought.

I am glad this was in the Plus catalog and i didn't have to pay for it--other than with largely wasted time.

No Untold Story

I wanted to know about the kursk sinking. what i got was nothing new and a opinion on death to america.

Doomsday agenda

Interesting until the leap from the submarine story to the author's imaginative doomsday scenarios.

Feeble Attempt to Frighten
