Oates is a fearless writer.”

Los Angeles Times

“Oates is a master of the dark tale—stories of the hunted and the hunter, of violence, trauma, and deep psychic wounds.”

Booklist (starred review)

Sourland is a gripping, haunting, and intensely moving collection of short stories by Joyce Carol Oates, one of America’s preeminent authors. Unforgettable tales that re-imagine the meaning of loss—often through violent means—Sourland is yet another extraordinary read from the literary icon who has previously brought us The Gravedigger’s Daughter, Blonde, We Were the Mulvaneys, and numerous other classic works of contemporary fiction.

This is a good story collection...better than some of Oates recent work. I am a huge fan of hers, but I am so easily disappointed.

The best stories are those about how a fixated human emotion, or thought pattern, can determine the course of a person's life.

Good Stories...Typical Oates

These stories are as "sour" as the title would indicate. Oates has always been a wild card in my reading selections. I never quite know what I'm going to get, and I like that she does not stay with the same types of story line and characterization, but then I am as likely to love one or two and dislike or be neutral about others.

Take a hint from the title.
