Raised by the empire. Captured by mercs. Leashed to a bodyguard. Where do her loyalties lie?

Edie has spent her life terraforming planets for the ruthless Crib empire as it bleeds the forgotten Fringe worlds dry.

Abducted by mercenaries for her unique abilities, she realizes captivity might be the closest thing to freedom she’s ever known… until they leash her to Finn, a battle-scarred rebel forced to protect her.

If Edie strays, Finn dies. If she resists her captors, they both do.

With no choice but to trust each other, Edie and Finn’s fragile alliance is about to be tested in a terrifying and deadly way. To survive, they must outwit the mercs, outrun the Crib, and navigate the untamed nightmare of Scarabaeus — the planet that may hold the key to saving the Fringe and securing Edie’s freedom.

She was built to obey. Now, she’ll fight to break every chain.

Sara Creasy’s Song of Scarabaeus is an all too familiar theme of a repressive futuristic planet spanning empire that trains children from an early age for specific functions. A young girl trained to engineer the terraforming of whole planets is kidnapped by mercenaries and tethered to a former freedom fighter (now a slave) as her bodyguard. She’s also dealing with the eventual reckoning of a prior job that she sabotaged to preserve a planet in its native state.

Creasy utilizes all the standard themes for this type of tale including a budding romance between the girl and the enigmatic bodyguard. The actions scenes are uninspiring and the motivation behind all the various players is never quite detailed to understand behaviors.

The narration is Virtual Voice with nonexistent character distinction making for a harder listen. Pacing is a tad slow.
