When best-selling romance novelist Joy Haversham was murdered, she left behind an unfinished, uncharacteristic, disturbing manuscript: Silver. The book has become the Holy Grail of the publishing world. But Joy’s husband, computer scientist Roger Haversham, refuses to allow publication.

Nick Slater, journalist and author, initially reported on the case, visiting the convicted murderer, Gil Ray, in prison. It was a terrifying experience for Slater, though strangely he was unable to recall anything Ray said during the interview.

Slater has been approached by Haversham’s daughter, Grace, after noticing similarities between Silver and Slater’s own novel – similarities he can’t account for. She wants him to revisit Ray, due for release on the day her parents should have been celebrating their silver wedding anniversary. She’s worried about her father spending nights in his laboratory creating interactive constructions of his dead wife. For Slater, dread of meeting Ray is mitigated by his desire to read Silver.

As the day approaches, he believes Grace is right to fear that whatever dark secret lies behind her mother’s death ... the nightmare is far from over.
