The information in this book is intended to reflect the history, migration and social influences during the setting of Silent Matriarchs. The time period covers nearly one hundred and fifty years of change in the average homestead, reflecting ethic influences from the Europeans and the North American Indians of the era. Likewise, some of the examples provided serve to illustrate the lifestyle changes that accompanied industrialization and changing times in rural Kentucky and Tennessee. The closing of the Civil War and the beginning of the period of recovery saw many changes in the larger cities, while life in the hills remained tough and "old–fashioned" for many generations. One could even argue today that the region Silent Matriarchs took place has remained somewhat old–fashioned and the people currently living there can still be found using the techniques passed down by their ancestors.
