Fawn loved this little community and found that many of the residents were very happy to be active and part of something bigger than themselves in their older years.
"The Chalet" is a Christian, rural, coastal resort community where middle to older age adults go to support several summer volunteer projects. These projects include building and improving housing for the needy and serving through the community’s action agencies. Those who volunteer, support each other's spouse losses and other challenges as they work to help the community. Romantic relationships are developed as those who stay become long-standing friends and soon-to-be lovers.
Fawn realized she can no longer sit on the sidelines, waiting for the world to catch up with her. She will eventually get to the point with her disease where she will no longer be able to work and live independently. This community "retirement" living option in the old Victorian home they are rehabbing speaks to her, and she must get involved despite her local doctor’s recommendation.
Brogan was in the operating room the day his fiancé was brought in, and despite the conflict of interest, he tried to fix her injuries. The aftermath resulted in him being an outcast from his family, so he escaped to Barco Bay. He made a good living but kept to himself, trying to keep at arm's length from personal interactions, especially love. However, the moment he meets Fawn, he knows she is in trouble, and he needs to work harder than ever to keep his heart protected and her at a distance.
