Deep in thought, I didn’t see the dark-colored car sitting at the end of a side street until I was almost upon it. When I was across from it, it suddenly accelerated straight ahead, directly at me. A scream rose in my throat and froze there. In that instant, I knew that if I slammed on the brakes, the car would hit me broadside and push me down the embankment into the river. Stiffening my arms and gripping onto the steering wheel with both hands, I jammed my foot on the accelerator.
My neck snapped as the sound of crunching metal and shattering glass rang out as the car struck the rear end of my vehicle. It spun completely around and faced the direction I came from. My head whirled dizzily and the airbag pinned me against the seat. Gulping for air, I struggled to open the door, but couldn’t.
