You just got served. Now what?

Whether it came from a stranger at your door or a surprise envelope in the mail, one thing is clear: you’re being sued—and you have no lawyer, no clue, and no time to waste.

This real-world survival guide is for regular people facing a lawsuit without legal help, without extra cash, and without a panic button. Written in plain English by Paul Barbie—your favorite no-fluff guide through legal chaos—this book breaks down exactly what to do next so you can protect yourself, your money, and your sanity.

Inside, you’ll learn:

  • What a lawsuit actually means (and what the court expects from you)

  • How to file an Answer and avoid a default judgment

  • Whether to fight, settle, or just stall strategically

  • What “discovery” is and how to respond without freaking out

  • What to wear, say, and bring to court (yes, even if you’re shaking)

  • What happens if you win—and how to actually collect

  • What happens if you lose—and how to survive wage garnishment, bank levies, and more

Plus: templates, cheat codes, and straight-up truth from someone who knows the system and isn’t afraid to tell you how it really works.

This is the book they hope you never find.
Short. Sharp. Zero legalese.
Because broke doesn’t mean helpless—and scared doesn’t mean stupid.

This book minimizes the litigation process, and could give self represented litigants a false sense of confidence.

It makes self representation seem very straightforward, which it is not. It gives no information on how attorneys might Weaponized the rules of civil procedure during discovery, binding versus persuasive versus secondary authority for legal research, how to write a motion, how to write a discovery request, depositions, objections during testimony, evidence authentication, case dismissal and summary judgment, formatting, deadlines, and so much more. One might argue that these rules depend on the state in the court, but most quartz model off the federal rules of civil procedure, and going over those can help you figure out what to look for in other states, and for the rules of your local court.

It doesn't mention self-help centers for self represented litigants, court clerks, or accommodations for disability and English as a second language.

You can't just admit, deny, or say you have no information as it suggests. You need to learn to cite statutes, and any denials must be grounded in law.

Also, the book has no human narrator, and it starts reading code from ChatGPT in the middle. Most self represented lit against lose, and I was really hoping for a book that discusses the traps that caused that to happen, and how to level the plane field if you are stuck representing yourself when the other side has an attorney or a law firm. Even if you found an attorney later, this information would be helpful so you could keep track of what they were doing on your case.

The book has 21 minutes left and I'm not even going to finish it. I'm glad it was included in my membership and I didn't pay for it.

I might see if the other one in the series is any better.
