This is a new edition of “Sentiment Not Principle: or, An Old Man’s Legacy.,” originally published in 1835 by Gilbert & Rivington Printers, of London, England. Part of the project Immortal Literature Series of classic literature, this is a new edition, complete with the two volumes, of a historical work published in 1835—not a facsimile reprint. Obvious typographical errors have been carefully corrected and the entire text has been reset and redesigned by Pen House Editions to enhance readability, while respecting the original edition. About the Author: Martha de Havilland was a British writer barely known as such outside her inner family circle. She published her first book as “M. de Havilland,” and the second as “Mrs. Charles de Havilland”—signing the latter’s preface by her initials, M. de H. She was born “Martha Saumarez,” in Guernsey, Channel Islands, on September 5, 1797. She was the daughter of Richard Saumarez and Martha Le Mesurier, and the niece of Admiral James Saumarez, the 1st Baron de Saumarez. She married Major Charles de Havilland, son of Sir Peter de Havilland and Carterette Fiott, on October 7, 1819. She died on December 26, 1864 at age 67. From October 7, 1819, her married name became “de Havilland.” She was the great-grandmother of British aviation pioneer and aircraft engineer Sir Geoffrey de Havilland, and of Oscar-winning actresses Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine.
