Acerca de esta escucha

Searching for Change takes the listener on a journey through my upbringing in Appalachia, exploring the joys and sorrows, the triumphs and struggles, and the people and places that shape life in this part of the world. From the rolling hills, to the close-knit communities, to steel mills and coal mines, the mural I paint of life in this unique and beautiful region is extremely vivid. Whether you are from Appalachia yourself or simply curious about this often misunderstood part of the country, I hope that my story will speak to you and provide a deeper understanding of the resilience and strength of the human spirit.

So much of this story resonated with me. It became a topic of family discussions, and Jan's vulnerability pulled me in and made this therapist do some more of my own inner work. For that, I was slightly annoyed but ultimately grateful;) I found myself sad and angry on behalf of little Janny, laughing at the relatability of the spaghetti incident, and cheering with happy tears at "We leave tomorrow."
This story takes heavy complex topics such as poverty, substance use, parenthood, education, marriage dynamics, and succes and weaves them together while remaining relatable and accessible to almost anyone. This one is worth the read.

I laughed, cried and cheered

There wasn’t a single moment I wasn’t rooting for little Janny. No one would of blamed him for following the path placed before him by his hillbilly ancestors. We’d say he was a product of his circumstances and it was all beyond his control. No. Not Janny. He labored, he preserved, he carved out a new path for himself. That is something extraordinary, that is something to celebrate! This book is a celebration and I absolutely adored it. There were times when I wanted to stop reading. The stories from his childhood…I can not even fathom. So many tears I shed over this little boy with a grumbling belly, too-big baseball cleats and bleached blue jeans. I so admired him. I hoped he’d have everything he ever dreamed of because he deserved it! He deserved it because he toiled like an Amish horse at harvest for it. Through the journey I came to see my own ungrateful self. A self I know I can change, and I will, because I want to. Thanks for that.

A memoir with a lovely lesson.

Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, I can relate to the Appalachian culture Jan so vividly recalls. This is an inspiring bio of someone who overcame several challenges to make a better life for himself and his family. Areas I found interesting were his thoughts on the "culture of poverty", the importance of good fathers and community role models, working to be the best at whatever you do, the importance of a faith community, and how overcoming hardship can create an sense of gratitude vs so much of an entitlement attitude of today's younger generations.

Inspiring Story

Jan Ackley delivered a personal and fresh experience about his life, trials, and overcoming them. He gave new insight to finding value in trials and being able to find gratitude in the simple things. His story is inspiring and sticks with you. I find myself recalling his words as I go through my day and remember to be grateful and find the good in hard times. He teaches the balance and relationship with patience and urgency, finding and building confidence, and reflecting on one’s life to guide you as you go forward. This has been the best book I’ve read in years.

Personal and Eye Opening

It was engaging and interesting. I feel as though I have a better understanding of multigenerational poverty. I also learned how the poor are preyed upon and taken advantage of regularly. It was eye opening and therapeutic in giving not just problems but solutions . I am glad I spent the time to read it and I have recommended it to others.

Wow change found!
