Christian identity is in moral and political crisis. Lee Camp writes “that one major reason Christianity in America has been made into a bad public joke is our failure to rightly understand what Christianity is.” Scandalous Witness provides a way forward. Although refusing to reduce Christianity to any partisan agenda, he reminds us that the gospel is inherently political and that we are called to be political witnesses.

Camp’s provocative diagnosis is that “American hope” is a bastardized form of Christian hope. The United States is not the hope of the world nor is it a Christian nation. Rather, “American Christian values” corrupts Christianity, and partisanship mocks the true scandal of the gospel. Camp reminds us that all empires fall.

By conceiving Christianity as a politic instead of a religion, we may begin to take seriously the true scandal of the gospel. We may envision new possibilities by which our gospel practices make a new world possible. Offering a robust vision of a Christian politic that exposes modern parodies of faith, Camp mixes wit, charm, and logic, challenging Christians to rethink who they are and how they participate in the modern world.

Thought provoking and well written

This is a very novel and on point look at politics and the church. It points to the way of Christ vs. the way of America.

Every Christian in America needs to wrestle with his argument

Thought provoking and helpful book that is biblically and historically informed. Given current event events in America, I think every Christian needs to consider and wrestle with his argument presented, even if you don’t agree with all of his points.

If you have wrestled with the notion that America is God’s country, that our nation is a Christian nation, and whether or not Christianity and politics merge together somehow, this book is for you. One of the best books on Christian discipleship through politics and what Christianity is, better yet, what American Christianity thinks it is and what it actually is. This book should be welcomed by all churches to help their flock navigate the hard things our society faces. This book should be offered as Bible study curriculum, community group book studies and the like. This is a fantastic tool in navigating what politic are, how Christianity IS a politic and how we should be engaging in these areas. This book is thoughtful, engaging, convicting, and refining. I will be widely recommending this book.

A MUST LISTEN!!!!

As a person who believes fully in the teachings in Christ but is constantly confused at influential Christians going against the path of Christ this is a wonderful book that speaks to my heart. I almost cried a few times bc my soul has felt justified in many ways that my fellow Christians told me I was wrong.
