Kaelen is a sellsword tired of the endless wars and pointless killing . When a mysterious patron offers him a king's ransom to retrieve a single relic, he sees a way out . But the prize lies in a place from which no one returns: the Citadel of Barbs . It is a fortress abandoned for centuries, the last bastion of a cruel sorcerer-king, a place that legends say is not just a ruin, but a living, hungry entity.

With a cynical thief as his only trustworthy companion, Kaelen joins a doomed company of adventurers on a suicide mission into a blighted land where the very soil is a carpet of rusted thorns and the wildlife grows grotesque spikes of metal from its flesh . Inside the fortress, they find a cosmic horror of shifting corridors, sentient traps, and walls that consume intruders, adding them to a gruesome gallery of the dead .

To survive, the warrior and the thief must forge a desperate alliance. To claim their prize, they must confront the Citadel's still-beating heart and face a truth more terrifying than any monster.
