Fun Zombie Book

I listen/read a lot of zombie books and this one is one of the best recent ones. very well done. interesting characters and a compelling story.

the cover really attracted me

So why I did chose this book to review? actually its because of the cover (I have little experience with zombie novels, I have read three or four only) but the cover really attracted me, the clever look in the eyes of that zombie decided it for me (I thought its kind of “aware zombie novel” something like “Horde”, but it wasn’t like that.)

Basically the story talks about five survivors of the zombie turning world, it focus on the dynamic between them more than what is really happening outside, and their thoughts, and feelings in situations. The group consist of: Hughes: a man who lost his family Parker: a rude man with power issues Kyle: an excited and dreamer young man Annie: a women with a secret and there are Frank and Carol also.

What I liked about the book is the simple psychological aspect of it (we see here the reaction of traumas in human being, ethical issues going in their minds, and the group dynamic between different people in the same situation), the characters were very good made, they were kind of unpredictable and very human, and it had new idea for the plot.

Yet it did suffer from some problems in my point of view, like the simplicity of the plot(climates were ending in a simple way ), and I couldn’t see some emotions that should have been there (the anger, the anguish, and maybe a little of hate ??), and the “theory of cause” also wasn’t convincing and ambiguous.

The narrator was Steven Roy Grimsley, and he did a great job of giving each character of the story a special tone and accent that suits the personality of the character, I liked how he controlled his voice to represent the different emotions and thoughts. as for the plot scenes the narration was very good in the action scenes that you just could feel it happening in front of your eyes.

Average Diversion

Good story with a few twists that you can guess early on. Narration is just ok. Not enough variation in characters’ voices. The women’s voices are particularly bad. It does have some interesting characters, but they all seem like their flailing instead of realizing and adapting to their new reality.

Decent

There are a couple of interesting twists tucked in to this story and you don't have to wait too long to find out what the first one is (I guessed it). The narrator does a decent job with the various voices. Some of the characters worked my nerves but it wouldn't be a good book if everyone made sense. Of course, there are a couple of moments where you think, "that would never work", etc, but the good action outweighs the bad. It wasn't a bad way to spend an afternoon and I will likely listen to the sequel when it becomes available.

Satisfying Zombie Story With Some Good Twists

Excellent audio book, highly recommended! I'm an avid horror reader but usually don't enjoy the zombie genre, however this book had me from the start. Great story with well-developed characters, great action scenes and some really good surprises. Michael J. Totten builds and reveals the story twists very well - some you'll see coming, some you won't. Narrator Steven Roy Grimsley is spot-on - he does an excellent job taking the listener along for each character's ride. Definitely worth a listen, can't wait for the next book in this series!

What was most disappointing about Michael J. Totten’s story?

I liked the plot, however, the characters were very flat. The author only gives you a little background about these people and then he tries to put them in situations that really require a lot more insight. Example: One character apparently falls in love with another character, however, they never even had a serious conversation together. It just didn't work and I couldn't get into it. The choices these people make are really dumb.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Steven Roy Grimsley?

I thought the narrator was actually good. He is the only reason I even gave this 2 stars.
