It started with a brutal stabbing on the beach under a lifeguard tower. But when Attorney Jordan meets the accused, he sees his client’s demeanor doesn’t match up to the gruesome nature of the crime. Listening to his client’s story during the initial interview at the jail, Jordan confronts his own biases as a criminal defense lawyer.

Despite a time constraint, Jordan’s curiosity compels him to absorb more of the story as he formulates a defense. But talk of Nazis and white power triggers concerns about his father’s war experience and the moral ambiguities of his profession.

Red Laces for Doc Martens is a raw and unsettling dive into the world of violence, identity, and moral conflict. Told in the first person through the eyes of a defense attorney, the story opens in the stark, unforgiving setting of a jail—harsh fluorescent lighting, cold stainless-steel furniture, and the overwhelming presence of menace and regret. The attorney meets with a young skinhead gang member, accused of a premeditated killing involving 27 stab wounds—a brutal act meant to earn him respect through spilled blood.

The tension is palpable, not only from the crime itself, but from the attorney’s inner turmoil. Defending someone proudly wearing swastikas is a bitter pill, especially for a man whose father fought against the Nazis in World War II. The personal conflict adds depth and moral weight to the narrative, raising questions of justice, legacy, and duty.

The narration adds grit and realism, making the listener feel trapped in that cold jail cell, grappling with the gravity of violence and the complexity of hate. The ending—centered around thoughts of potential poetic justice involving a highway—leaves a lasting impression, subtly suggesting consequences that go beyond legal outcomes.

A chilling and thought-provoking listen that lingers long after the final line.

The narrator did an excellent job. The storyline was very well done. I wanted to know how the attorney intended to defend his client. Would the attorney be able to defend his client properly with the conflict of his father serving in the armed forces fighting against Nazi Germany. Like most short stories, it leaves me hanging.
