Aujourd'hui, la "plainte sommeil" est devenue un problème de santé publique. Près d'un français sur deux considère souffrir d'insomnies ou ne pas dormir assez. Pour les scientifiques, la connaissance du sommeil est très récente. Elle a commencé à se construire dans les années 50 grâce à l'enregistrement de l'activité électrique du cerveau pendant le sommeil. Elle s'est accélérée à partir des années 80 avec les enregistrements numériques. Longtemps considéré comme un état passif et une perte de temps, le sommeil s'avère en réalité un état actif au cours duquel le cerveau effectue un traitement des informations acquises dans la journée et participe ainsi à la construction cérébrale et à la mémorisation.
