Hans Joachim Markowitsch, * 1949 Singen, ist Professor für Physiologische Psychologie an der Universität Bielefeld und Direktor des Zentrums für interdisziplinäre Forschung.
Harte Naturwissenschaftler stehen Freuds Psychoanalyse eher skeptisch gegenüber. Doch dieser Skeptizismus ist unbegründet: Die modernen Neurowissenschaften konnten zentrale Prinzipien von Freuds Theorie bestätigen. Hans J. Markowitsch, Professor für physiologische Psychologie an der Universität Bielefeld, zeigt die Schnittstellen zwischen Psychoanalyse und Hirnforschung und erläutert die Gemeinsamkeiten an vier zentralen Thesen der Psychoanalyse:
- Die Umwelt beeinflusst das Individuum, es ist nicht determiniert,
- Erfahrungen aus Kindheit und Jugend sind prägend für unser späteres Leben,
- Unser Verhalten ist wesentlich durch Unbewusstes und Vorbewusstes bestimmt,
- Für die Erinnerung, insbesondere die Rekonstruktion der eigenen Lebensgeschichte sind Emotion und Kognition gleichermaßen entscheidend

Thomas Metzinger, * 12. März 1958 in Frankfurt am Main, ist Professor für Philosophie und Leiter des Arbeitsbereichs Theoretische Philosophie am Philosophischen Seminar der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz.
Bald wird uns die Wissenschaft vom Gehirn nicht nur zeigen, wie sich Abläufe - und damit Bewusstseinszustände - in unserem Kopf erklären lassen. Neuro-Arznei, ja Neuro-Doping wird das Mentale manipulierbar machen. Solche Eingriffsmöglichkeiten der modernen Neurowissenschaften in das Bewusstsein machen eine Reflektion der ethischen Implikationen notwendig. Dabei geht es nicht nur um neue Forschungsethik, sondern um eine Bewusstseinsethik. Welche Bewusstseinszustände sind illegal, welche sollen gefördert werden? Was ist überhaupt ein guter Bewusstseinszustand?
Diese Einschätzung der Erlebnisformen wäre die Fragestellungen einer neuen Bewusstseinskultur. Auch die Behandlung von Tieren gehört in diesen Problembereich, denn zweifellos besitzen sie eine Leidensfähigkeit. Dürfen wir ihnen Bewusstseinszustände zufügen, die nur unserer Gattung dienen? Die größten Anforderungen an eine Bewusstseinskultur entspringen jedoch unseren neuen medialen Umwelten, d.h. den Zuständen, die durch technische Mittel induziert sind. Metzinger plädiert für eine interdisziplinäre, an praktisch-kritischer Rationalität orientierte Kultur.
