Resumen del Editor

FROM THE BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF THE SUPERVILLAINY SAGA

What if all the villains of slasher movies were real? What if the movies made about them were just adaptations of real-life killers with supernatural powers? This is a fact known to William and Carrie because their father, Billy the Undying, was one of the worst slashers of all time. So much so that they've spent the past decade in an asylum out of fear they'd end up just like him. Escaping, the two have decided to form a new life on the road. Except, a chance encounter in a dingy diner introduces William to the girl of his dreams.

Too bad she's a girl on a mission to kill all slashers. But maybe the best way to catch a supernatural serial killer is with another pair of them.

Enjoy this exciting prequel to the United States of Monsters books!

My Review

This was not the book I wanted but rather the book that I needed. I never been into slashers and have no desire to read a book about death and mayem given Covid 19. I only bouht it to support Phipps and Kafer. I loved it so much because it was funny. A really good time. I think CT wrote it during the pandemic and it was theraputic for him. It certainly was for me.

CT Phipps best book yet.

author has a great talent at taking well known tropes and shinning new light on them. this book is no different. a very interesting look at the other side of 80s/90s slasher horror flicks, and one I wasn't at all expecting.

a fun ride with some copyright protected characters we all know and love. can't wait for the next one.

I would have liked a little more variation in the narrator's character voices. sometimes I got a bit lost with who said what, because there wasn't distinctive enough voices.

Bark!

Fun and snarky!

If you've read Phipps' Supervilliany series, you'll recognize the snark and inherent likeability of the bad guys. William is a funny, witty take on a Dexter-type character. Carrie is full-on Harley Quinn type character. Nancy is more like a censored Buffy Summers. All in all, a very fun cast of unlikely heroes. Lots of pop culture from slasher films makes it especially fun. Kafer did a great job with the narration, as usual. Well done.

Slasher Fun at it's Best!

Psycho Killers in Love by C.T. Phipps is a unique take on the horror genre involving slashers. Imagine a world where the TV/Movie slashers were real and walking around every day; nothing was imagined or mythical. Mix in a brother and sister who were raised by the Santa slasher, that has the “slasher” gene and you have a delightful story.

The story is action-packed and engaging with a cross over into other CT Phipps worlds. Peppered with his pop-cultural references, one can only come to love this book. Add in the dialog which is fun and often the character’s thoughts comes out in the dialog making it rich and hilarious. With his characters, there are no filters that make for an interesting listen!
The plot and storyline are well constructed with plot twists that were interesting and intriguing. It is a special skill of Phipps where he can bring in pop cultural references and make the “bad guys” good!

The characters were well developed but I look forward to watching their growth. Phipps has a skill for making his audience love the worst of the worst by giving us more insight into their thoughts and experiences. I mean who in their right mind would feel sympathy for a slasher or hope they get their slash on?

And OMG Jeffrey Kafer as the narrator … perfect! He can deliver the dialog without cracking up or making it sound forced – it is very natural and delivered with ease. I enjoy hearing Kafer as his voices are matched to what you expect the characters to be and for a male narrator, he does female voices well.

There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook, Crossroads Press provides an excellent production.
I cannot wait for more CT Phipps books and especially book 2 in this series.

This book was also awarded the Audiobook Reviewers Choice Award.

So much fun!

This story could have easily fallen flat, but instead, it took the horror/slasher movie tropes and created a well thought out universe with fantastic characters. There's constant humor that hits the mark every time. I want more books in this universe. Definitely a must read/listen!

A great addition to the Author's shared universe

I make no secret of the fact C.T. Phipps is probably my favorite author writing today, indie or traditionally published. I was given a chance to review an early copy of his latest book, so of course I jumped at the opportunity. I'm definitely glad I did, this being a stand alone that still ties into his United States of Monsters, and adds to the rich tapestry of that collection of series.

PLOT SUMMARY

In a world where slasher movies are based on real slashers, such as Fred, Mike, the Camp Killer and The Camp Killer's Mother, William and Carrie England know all about it. Their father, Billy Jones Patrick, was one of the original slashers, one who specialized and slumber parties, sororities and even Christmas. Needless to say, they had some lousy Christmases over the years. When their father was finally killed, they were both grabbed by the authorities and put in an insane asylum, since they were thought to have the slasher gene. Turns out they did, although the state didn't really know that. Now in their 20's, William and Carrie have escaped from their years of shock treatments, drug therapy and other warped government experimentation, and are on the run from the law.

Unfortunately, they can't escape their father, who, although he's dead, still keeps hanging around as a ghost. Stopped off in a small Kansas town, which it turns out is a nexus for slashers, William, who has never actually killed someone, has a weird feeling when a customer enters the diner they're in, as he can see the evil and murders the man has committed. Feeling an overwhelming need to murder the man, and with a voice in his head, the Spirit of the Hunt, egging him on, William follows him out of the diner to the back parking lot.

As he is about to murder the man, the tables are turned on him and William is murdered by the man instead. Just before he dies, though, he sees the man get killed by a woman with a golf club who was locked in the man's trunk. When he regenerates back to life, Carrie comes out and they meet the girl, Nancy. It turns out she is whats known as an Artemis, those rare girls at the end of horror movies that end up killing the slasher. It turns out that like William and Carrie, she has supernatural abilities, such as strength, speed and regeneration.

She explains she was at a bachlorette party that was captured by a group of rich people to hunt for sport. Deciding they needed to help her, they retreated to their house, an abandoned drug house, where they make a discovery: there is a staked vampire in the basement that has been drained of blood. This discovery leads to a wild series of events, as the drug makers return, and William and crew end their threat, awakening the vampire at the same time, who agrees to help them take the people hunters down and rescue Nancy's friends.

This leads to revelations about the group that has surprise origins with Billy and his contemporaries, and also the mysterious force behind the hunter's group. A force that has a completely unexpected link to William and Carrie's past, that might have world altering consequences if not stopped. Can a couple slashers, a slasher killer and a vampire possibly stop the threat, and do they really want to?

CHARACTERS AND WORLD BUILDING

As with any book by C. T. Phipps, the characters are what drives the story. William, Carrie and Nancy are just such interesting characters, fighting (or not) against their very genes and forces outside their control trying to mold them into the very stereotypes they were meant to be. William and Carrie were basically trained to be killers, and while Carrie embraces it, William has fought it, even going so far as to get his CPA, as far from being a slasher as you can get. Nancy is in a similar state, as her mother and grandmother were both involved as victims of slashers, and are the source of her Artemis genes. They aren't perfect, and defy their stereotypes, as William and Nancy should be deadly enemies, yet find themselves drawn to each other. There are a lot of fun dynamics within the group. None of them feel like cardboard cutouts, but just people dealing with unusual issues. The villains are an interesting bunch, tying into various other parts of the various US of Monsters books, adding backstory to those as well. We get an idea of their thought processes, and their actions are consistent within their character arcs. All told, an excellent group of characters.

The world building for this book is a strength as well. Its a world with a layer of the supernatural just out of sight, where supernatural slashers, vampires, demons, zombies and other assorted supernaturals exist. Tying into the other books, anyone who's read any of those knows just how much more supernatural world there is. This one delves into a more horror oriented corner of that universe, where the things that go bump in the night really are trying to kill you. You can tell the writer has a wealth of knowledge of the slasher genre, and puts it to good use building this corner of his shared universe.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Shared universes tend to be hit or miss in my opinion, but C. T. Phipps just keeps adding new corners to his universe, adding new layers of goodness. They all interconnect in various ways, but each maintain their own distinctiveness. I consider this to be a worthy addition to his universe, while still being able to stand on its own. I definitely recommend this one as a must read.

A fun listen!

I always expect a book from C.T. Phipps to make me smile. There are always a few good laughs in his books in the United States of Monsters books. I live how they are all connected but still their own separate stories. Jeffrey Kafer is always great to listen to and does a great job with the narration! Can't wait for more from this series!

If you like 80s slasher flicks, you'll love this.

Psycho Killers in Love is a new story by C.T. Phipps, who is an author I really love. Phipps’s writing is one that always makes me laugh and this story is no different. This story brings to life a whole new group of characters set in the United States of Monsters books (Straight Outta Fangton, Bright Falls Mysteries, Red Room and Morgan Detective Agency series). William and Carrie are brother and sister are born “slashers” They have special powers and a need to kill. Their father is a ghost, who follows them around and gives them fits, as they don’t give in to the urge to kill as much as he would like, was also a slasher.

Things get even more hairy when William and Carrie meet a woman who goes around killing slashers, so of course William has the hots for her. But first, they work together to rescue the sorority sisters of Theta Alpha Alpha, which Carrie refers to as T&A (hehehe). There are a few twists and turns in the story that I won’t get into to avoid any spoilers.

While this isn’t my favorite C.T. Phipps story, I did have a good time while listening to it. I grew up with the 80s horror flicks and there are a lot of references used in this story, which I enjoyed, a lot. I also had a great time with the characters, which is no surprise, I always have fun with Phipps’s characters. You can read this story without having read any of the other books set in this world (this one actually takes place chronologically before the others). I do highly recommend this story to fans of 80s slasher films (and any horror fans in general).

Narration (5 stars)
This story was performed by Jeffery Kafer, who does a large portion of Phipps’s stories. He does a wonderful job with all the characters. He’s amazing at his ability to bring out the humor in a story. I’m always excited to listen to a book while he reads to me.
