DISCOVER THE MYSTERY
All wrestlers, welcome.
Everyone wrestles with God, or God's word, for various reasons. Book Five, Psalms 107-150 is the original collection of King David's praise and worship music, but it is filled with theology and episodes in life in which David also wrestled. Maybe that is why many refer to this volume as the Psalms of Ascent or the Pilgrimage Psalms. They are a realistic collection of prayers, meditations, and laments from along life's journey.
The Psalms are good for the soul.
Music brings a bodily, physical, spiritual knowledge into life that is different than knowing intellectual truth. These Psalm Hymns make the sacred Hebrew verses singable, recitable, and in context, ready for western believers to taste on our tongues. The Psalm Hymns are adapted from tried and true versions of Scripture into the rhymes and meters of hymn tunes you'll recognize (or can easily Google).
Maybe your favorite psalm is included here. Now, you can sing it. Yes, there are some sticky psalms, like Psalm 119 which shows King David's love of God's law in stanzas to be sung. You will find answers while singing God's word, why law is precious to a King.
Psalm 109 and 137 are not easy songs. One is about betrayal and slander. The other is full of bile and bitterness, written by the captives on the waters of Babylon after the desolation of Jerusalem.
Yet, there are the most lyrical and beautiful of praises for the eternal rule of God found in the Psalms journeying to Jerusalem or just journeying through a life that may be compromised or faithful as the lyricist happens to be.
Sing these, Psalm 107 and Psalm 136 to gain a deep impression of God's ability to transform any soul on land or sea...in any nation through any difficulty! All earth is under His jurisdiction!
Psalm 139 can be sung to two different hymns. It describes how God knit our bodies together in secret, and how He watches over, and cares for us, male and female, no matter how hard we run, no matter how far we sail, or how distracted or depressed we may become.
Some Celebration Psalms finish all of David's writings as an encore, a jubilee, a curtain call. Now, sing them!
If you have ever asked any of these questions, so did the great cloud of witnesses. This book is for you and your Bible study:
- How do you know God sees me personally? Where does the Bible say it?
- Who is Yahweh? What do His various names mean for my life?
- How can a young man keep his way pure?
- Is it too late to try to grow roots of a good life in a complex world?
- Where is "Holy Land" "Promised Land"? Is this legacy for me?
- Who is the "seed of Abraham"?
- Are there any real rewards for obeying God if we are guaranteed salvation?
- What matters most?
- Can I suddenly know what 'righteousness' means by singing the Psalms?
