Interesting subject

Wow!!!! I just finished a fantastic book about Indo-European languages. It pulls in genetics and archeology to talk about the movement of people and cultures. I learned so much. It’s a subject I’ve always been interested in. It goes in to much more granular detail than was even possible 10 years ago.

Really informative

The subject is fascinating and I greatly enjoyed the science presented. My reason for not giving it 5 stars is the performance. I found the narrator a bit too soothing unfortunately. It was hard to stay focused at times and I almost fell asleep, which never happens. And ironically enough, as an American listener, some of her pronunciations were difficult to understand at first. Most likely that's as much to do with the subject matter as anything else because I don't generally struggle with accents. But there were times I had to go back and relisten to sentences to catch what she was saying in English, not in the other languages occasionally presented. Overall a good book and a wonderful dive into the history of the language group.

Great start, somewhat unfocused second half, solid performance

This was a well-written and intriguing book about a topic that has long fascinated me. The author draws on what seems to be an expansive base of research and scholarly debate and navigates it all in an easily digestible way. The book is enlivened by poetic flourishes, historical erudition, and the occasional flight of speculative fancy.

Once the stories of the proto-proto-indoeuropeans and the pivotal Yamnaya people are concluded, the book wanders a bit and loses a central thread, spreading the story over each of the main branches of linguistic lineage. This is to be excused somewhat (after all, the story is about the wandering and scattering of peoples), but I still could have used a little more structure to the discussions of the celts, germanics, latins, indo-iranians, etc.

Performance is very good. There are acknowledgments at the end thanking a list of pronunciation consultants. I appreciate the effort that went into the production.

A great book for those interested in history.

The book is Interesting and informative. It is superbly narrated. I would recommend it to anyone with interest in history and cultures.
