You’re immediately invested in Chris’s journey as he navigates the slings and arrows of an all-boys school. A true coming-of-age story that builds tension and raises the stakes in every chapter. The writing is studded with wit and the metaphors are razor sharp. Then there’s the immersive experience of sound, music and effects, which are added with a light touch, just enough to enhance without overwhelming the narration. Great listen!

Excellent Coming of Age Story for Music Lovers

Talkin’s novel is a delightful and endearing odyssey into the world of prep schools and 70’s London where music and self discovery wait at every turn of the page. It made me nostalgic for a time I wasn’t even alive for; luckily, the story and its protagonist are clear enough to act as both a vessel for the audience and a history lesson for those unfamiliar. The contrast of rock and classical music throughout make for an energetic listen and a reminder that things that seem completely different may have more in common than meet the eye. No matter what you are looking for, this book will have something to keep you hooked in a natural way. Private School Punk tackles race, class, gender, sexuality, romance and the general confusion of figuring out who you are and want you want with ease and the perfect amount of tension throughout. This would be an excellent way to introduce someone young or old about the origins of british punk music - I’ve already made a playlist with the many artists featured!

An audiobook that feels like a movie for your ears

I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and Private School Punk really stands out. The production is top-notch — layered with sound effects and original music that helps me imagine 1970s London. The performances are lively and believable and Chris was a sympathetic hero. The story mixes a lot of humor, rebellion, and heart in a way that sneaks up on you. Even if you’re not into punk, it’s a fantastic coming-of-age tale and one of the best audiobook listens I’ve found this year.
