Princess describes the life of Princess Sultana Al Sa'ud, a princess in the royal house of Saudi Arabia. Hidden behind her black veil, she is a prisoner, jailed by her father, her husband, and her country.

Sultana tells of appalling oppressions, everyday occurrences that in any other culture would be seen as shocking human rights violations: 13-year-old girls forced to marry men five times their age; young women killed by drowning, stoning, or isolation in the "women's room". Princess is a testimony to a woman of indomitable spirit and courage, and you will never forget her or her Muslim sisters.

A New York Times best-seller, Princess was named one of the 500 Great Books by Women Since 1300. It was also an Alternate Selection of the Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club and a Reader's Digest Selection.

I found this a good read. not many surprises to me, regarding the misuse and abuse of women by the hands of men with power and autonomy. but the story itself is shocking, as well as fascinating and keeps interest. I wanted more just as it ended. 😊👍🏼

very interesting look

this was very well written and very sad and I found myself gasping at times at the cruelty that they had to endure in the very recent past. I can only hope and pray that things are better for Saudi Arabian women today.

What a devastating look at Saudi life.

Such a powerful book. To hear a full story of this princess' experience just brings you in and really makes you feel for her. I hope something can be done for women in Saudi Arabia... :(

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I wouldn't recommend this book for the faint of heart. It's hard to continue reading it.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that the fact that she took the time to write down and record the truth. It's hard to put everything in words

What about Catherine Byers’s performance did you like?

She stayed true to the emotions in the characters

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me cry and lose sleep over it. I can't believe that this still happens across the world. It's terrifying to know this let alone go through it. I still don't understand why other countries are not interfering with this.

Most terrifying story ever told

I really enjoyed this book. A friend from the middle east recommended it, and I'm glad that I picked it up.

Well done.

I lived in the Middle East for ten years and was not aware of this atrocities. I kept looking for every opportunity to keep listening. I did not think the narrator had a robotic voice, as a matter of fact I enjoyed her calm and clear voice. I already bought book 2.

Excellent book!!

I found the story of princess whole town is life interesting, fascinating and horrific. Listening to her plight and that of the women in Saudi Arabia caused me to appreciate our freedom here in the United States and how fragile freedom can be against fanatics and bullies. We have our own fanatics and Belize attempting to take hold in United States to suppress discussion and expression of any idea they don't like. This book and serve as a reminder how fragile freedom is and how Portland is that everyone gets to speak their mind even if it's not popular. As for the women of the Middle East the treatment they receive from their men and government is truly barbaric, backward and Medievil. Someday I'm sure they will face the wrath of the general populace and their women that they suppress so harshly. Maybe by some miracle they will wake up and begin to treat people as valuable and invested with human rights but I'm sure there'll be a fierce struggle rather than an intellectual acceptance of that truth. I do highly recommend this book as an insight into what society can be at the values are worked and twisted and why we should be involved with encouraging change and growth in the Middle East another backwards areas.
