Prince is a gripping and unforgettable memoir that pulls you into a true story of resilience, hope, and the unbreakable human spirit. Set against the haunting backdrop of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda, this powerful narrative follows one boy’s journey through fear, loss, and survival—as he searches for light in the darkest of times.

Told with raw honesty and lyrical grace, Prince weaves together memory and meaning to reveal how beauty can rise from ashes. His voice—both tender and courageous—invites listeners into a world where courage is quiet, faith is fierce, and healing is possible.

This audiobook isn’t just a story of survival—it’s a testament to what it means to reclaim life, dignity, and purpose. Let it move you. Let it stay with you. Let it change you.

This story is both eye-opening and deeply rewarding. The opening chapters vividly portray life in rural Rwanda, set against a serene landscape, while introducing the importance of oral tradition in preserving African culture. The author explores strong communal bonds as an extension of family, the separation of children from the nuclear family in pursuit of education, and the impact of real-life individuals, rather than fictional heroes, in shaping society. As readers, we salivate over a delectable farm-to-table diet and witness the deep connection between two dear friends who find humor in the face of oppression and discrimination. History has a troubling way of repeating itself, and this book is a sobering reminder of that reality. I learned that in Rwanda, some generations experienced this repeatedly through ethnic cleansing, civil war, and ultimately The 1994 Genocide Against The Tutsi. The author, Prince Kayigire helps the reader understand the importance of correctly naming atrocities. He highlights the role of colonial rule in laying the groundwork for harmful extremist ideologies, the use of media to spread propaganda that fueled the denigration and mass killing of Tutsi people, and the unconscionable position of the church and its leadership. Through a deeply personal account, he shares experiences that no human, let alone a child, should ever endure. I feel blessed to hear Prince’s account of survival in the aftermath of these unspeakable atrocities. I implore others to join me in reading PRINCE: BEAUTY FOR ASHES, to learn these truths, recognize them when they arise, and work toward preventing future harm, in the hope of creating a better world for generations to come.
