A Spoken Mage companion novel

When a Sekali princess unexpectedly bursts into Elena and Lucas’s betrothal celebrations, Ardann is forced to send a team to investigate her claims of a new enemy. The last thing Saffron expects, or wants, is to be called on to assist. But she can’t risk disgracing her family by refusing to join the expedition.

Julian, on the other hand, leaps at the chance to distinguish himself and gain favor with the Sekalis by helping the princess. What he doesn’t expect is to find himself equally interested in the chance to prove himself to an inconsequential Callinos girl he’s only ever thought of as Finnian’s shadow.

But the further the team goes into the mountains, the more mysteries they uncover. And with their usual defenses and compositions inexplicably failing, Saffron and Julian will have to rely on each other if they’re to defend their kingdom and escape with both their hearts and lives intact.

The audiobook is well made, no complaints about the quality of the narration. This story is slightly different from the others set in the same world (spoken mage and hidden mage series'). It is written more in a style of a traditional romance novel compared to the style of a fantasy novel as the others were. This one switches between the male and female perspective which is not uncommon in romance fiction. I'm not sure why anyone reviewed it stating that this switch or change was confusing to the story. It was perfectly easy to follow and the story moves seamlessly with no difficult to comprehend who is narrating or interruption to the story line. My one complaint is that it does feel like the two characters are quick to identify their feelings as love, but again this isn't unusual for a romance novel. The story is also significantly shorter, being one stand-alone novel compared to a multi novel series, than the others so I don't think the reviews that complain about this fact as a major issue to the story are being fair on that point. Obviously from the beginning you expect the two protagonists will find their way together (it was indicated in the final spoken mage story so that shouldn't be a spoiler or shock). The story still holds a lot of fantasy elements that are surprising and overall it's a very enjoyable read. It's my least favorite in the related series books (personally I like the hidden mage series' the best) but it's fully worth reading and enjoying. I would love to read more stories set in this fantasy world Cellier created here. I hope to see more in the future and you should definitely buy and enjoy this book.

Power of Pen and Voice (The Spoken Mage Book 5) ~~ Alright, this one right here felt like coming full circle ~ and I mean that in the best way. I went into Power of Pen and Voice already attached to this world and these characters, but this book really pulls everything together in a way that feels earned. You’re not just reading another installment—you’re watching everything finally click into place.

Following Saffron again was such a strong choice. She’s grown so much from where she started, and you can really see her confidence (even when she’s doubting herself). She’s not perfect, and that’s exactly why she works so well as a main character. Then you’ve got Julian and he honestly surprised me. He starts off with that “I need to prove myself” energy, but there’s more depth to him than I expected, and watching that unfold kept me hooked.

The storyline itself? It’s got that mix I love—political tension, magic, and just enough danger to keep things moving without dragging. The whole situation with the Sekali princess kicks things off in a way that immediately pulls you in, and from there it’s one thing after another. No wasted time, no filler—just solid progression.

Now let’s talk Kindle vs. Audible…

On Kindle, the writing flows easily. Melanie Cellier has a way of keeping things clean and readable while still building a full world. You don’t feel overwhelmed, but you’re definitely immersed.

On Audible, it brings a whole different layer. The narration really helps distinguish the characters and adds emotion to scenes that might feel quieter on the page. You can hear the tension, the hesitation, the growth—it just hits differently.

And I’ll be honest—this book leans a little more into character development than nonstop action, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s what makes the ending feel satisfying instead of rushed.

By the time I finished, I just sat there for a second thinking… yeah, that was a good ride. It wrapped things up without feeling forced, and it stayed true to the tone of the entire series.

I would definitely recommend this book and series and can’t wait to start on the next book. If you want to know what happens next, you’ll just have to read this series yourself ~ you won’t regret it.
