Set in Northern and Richmond, Virginia, during the early to mid-‘80s, Pocket of Pain is a poignant and inspirational coming-of-age story about a young woman who endures gaslighting and abuse, who eventually finds the courage to break free.
As her parents’ marriage unravels, she falls into a relationship with a boy five years older—only to discover he is even more controlling than her father. But when she goes to college, leaving him behind, she begins to redefine herself and imagine a different future as she submerges herself in the ‘80s Richmond punk rock scene—a world of loud, hard-core music, experimental art, thrift-store clothes, and a curious boy who, for the first time, really sees her.
Ultimately, a dark secret from the past surfaces, and she is forced to take another hard look at the relationship that she thought was over—before she can finally leave the past behind.
Like many teens, music plays an essential role in her evolution; classic rock and new punk bands create the soundtrack to the story, while bold ‘80s fashion sets the scene. This is no ordinary memoir! It's movie ready!
Pocket of Pain is both heartbreaking and hopeful—a vital conversation piece for anyone who has endured gaslighting and abuse. It reminds us that we are not alone. It also reveals the resilience and optimism this young woman always held on to. Through her story, we experience her journey as she takes us through the euphoria of her quest to find happiness.

“Pocket of Pain” is a deeply honest and courageous story that many women will recognize in different ways depending on where they are in life. Younger women may hear wisdom that could help them navigate relationships and difficult choices, while women who have already walked through similar experiences may find understanding, validation, and even a sense of healing.
The author writes with sincerity and emotional clarity, making the story feel very real and very human. Rather than simply recounting hardship, she reflects on it in a thoughtful way that reveals resilience, insight, and personal growth.
As someone from Richmond, and living in Richmond, I was especially glad to learn that the author is now part of this community and attended VCU as you will hear in the descriptions in her book. It’s meaningful to know that such an authentic voice is right here among us, and I hope more people locally discover her work.
I would especially encourage young women to listen to this book, but I believe women of any age who have experienced emotional challenges in their lives will find it very meaningful.
A brave, thoughtful, and worthwhile listen. Highly recommended!

Days and friendships). Suzanne is devoted to carrying around old friends, friendships, and stories with a hint of something sultry and sexy - it’s a hippy like freedom mixed with burden and past traumas…. All of course wrapped in her amazing ability to tell the story. Fun! A great “get away in your mind” read (listen).
A soulful author
