Completely smitten with her charming cowboy, Rose plunges headlong into their relationship despite Aggie's warnings about where the two might be headed. With the county "war" between rival factions ramping up in Lincoln, Mother Aggie takes her little family to stay at Sam's ranch where they can avoid danger as well as explore new possibilities. Sam, the rancher and family friend, is very much in love with Rose but she continues to ignore him. One day after the family has returned to Lincoln, Billy sends Rose a message to meet him at the local landmark, the old gnarly oak along the Rio Bonito River. There, the two make plans for their future but Billy's trouble with the law overshadows their joy. Aggie continues to train up the children, including Rose, with the word of God, but Rose increasingly depends on her love for Billy to provide the happiness she longs for. The new deputy in town has his eyes on the beautiful Rose not only for her good looks but as a source to discover the whereabouts of the elusive outlaw.
