What You’ll Learn

This course includes Lessons 21-25 from the Spanish Level 5 program featuring 2.5 hours of language instruction. Each lesson provides 30 minutes of spoken language practice, with an introductory conversation, and new vocabulary and structures. Detailed instructions enable you to understand and participate in the conversation. Practice for vocabulary introduced in previous lessons is included in each lesson. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension, and on learning to speak Spanish.

I really like this course. I review it frequently as I don’t get enough exposure to speak it. When I do I am complimented on my Spanish. I have a lot more to learn as many speak with less formal words or slang but the native speakers always seem to understand what I’m saying.

Ugh. The more things change...

I was optimistic about the new Pimsleur Spanish. I grew up (in the 90s & 2000s) on the 1960s version where I was almost always an "American man" going to a foreign country to meet Spanish speaking women. It was REALLY SEXIST. So I was pleased in 2022 to see this newly updated version. Where the gender roles are more equal. Until lesson 22 of season 5. The female character states that they were in the mountains and she had a flat tire which her ex changed. She then starts to say something that seems like it's going to be "I would have done it myself" and I felt all optimistic like maybe this female character can change tires. But NO. Because then she said "I don't know what I would have done if I was alone". REALLY PIMSLEUR. How about maybe she would charge the tire??? Or hike to a garage for assistance? Or anything else?? Why can't the man be the one who doesn't know what to do and the woman change the tire? It's like that talking Barbie doll that says "math is hard". Except since it's a role playing educational tool, to make use of it, you are forcing me to pretend to BE this helpless woman who can't fix her own flat tire situation and is scared to travel alone. And just to be clear THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

And that's not the only thing like that I've noticed. At one point I think another female character says she doesn't like traveling alone too. They do a little gender equality here and there, but it's still really sexist. Unequal. All the girlfriends and wives get bracelets and necklaces for their regalos, something for the house etc. How about a soccer jersey for one of the women??????? When I was in Latin America I met a super tough awesome female lesbian soccer player who definitely wasn't running around wearing bracelets and necklaces. Why can't she be a character too???? We had a driver who dressed lkke a man and was super tough. Where is she in this??? And for that matter where ARE all the LGBTQIA+ characters??? I'm up to Unit 5 lesson 22 and there has NOT BEEN ONE SINGLE LGBTQIA+ person. Given the gendered word endings shouldn't we know what to do when those don't fit???? How to talk to or about a non-binary person, or be one ourselves??? Couldn't they be one woman married to another woman or man to a man???? Might we know the words for these things??? And why can't we exist in this totally made up Spanish conversation world??? You could have made it be anything because you created all these conversations, this world, but instead you made it regressive but I'm sure are patting yourselves on the back for how inclusive it is. BAD WORK.
